How many full grown cons in a 55 long?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I use feeder cons all the time with no problems (except I have found 1/2 inch and inch grow outs living in the canister filter on the con tank before.)
The main thing is don't put in more then you fish can eat in a day or two and you shouldn't have any live long enough to cause any trouble.

I also had a question about size. I assume Id be best to purchase a 2nd pair that is roughly the same size as mine now? They are about 1.5 - 2 inches or so. It's gonna be an awful lot of space for just the two pairs until theyre grown lol. What sorts of fish can I stick in there with them safely that wont pick off too many eggs or get eaten/killed by the cons?

Yes try to match the size of the old pair with the new pair and don't be shocked if your pairs brake up, I had 2 pairs that when put together in a 55 from their individual tanks, split then fought for alpha fish and when the pecking order was reestablished the pairs had switched mates.

You may be surprised what even a small con will kill or at least make miserable. I had my new pair both under 2 inch in a 55 with a pair of 6 inch sevrum and a 7 inch pleco and had to remove the pleco as the female con tyred to pick out his eyes. I had to remove the male con at just under 3 inch and separate them for a bit till I use all the young from the last batch up, he now not only holds his own but even has his own corner territory of the 125 with 4 5-7inch oscars.
You could try alot of different fish but in the end expect the tank filler to be taken out at some point and time. If its just to fill the tank go with some sort of mid to high range schooling fish or just waite a couple of months with and the 2 con pairs will fill the tank with lots and lots of young.
