Any thoughts on fish for the top of my tank. Must be active and work with what I have

I would say with your current stock they will get too big.
I don't believe they are surface dwelling fish anyway.

Chocolate cichlids are peaceful and spend most of their time near the surface begging for food.
They are colourful with age and are a great species to own. They get quite big but are not energetic fish.
Penguin tetras also swim near the surface and look great in numbers but may be preyed upon by your geos when they grow.
I kept a shoal with some 6inch altifrons and they were ignored.

If you never had the sd's angel fish or festivums would be my first choice. They seem like the perfect partners for geos.
I think your sd's would be a bit to active for them though.

I'll probably just go with the torpedo barbs then. Even thought like you say they don't fit with the type of fish but I'm sure they will work together

I'm no expert on barbs but don't they swim in the lower half of the water column?

Erm I hope not. I had 1 on his own for around a year and he stayed mid to high but don't know if that because he was on his own
