How many goldies in a 50 gallon?

If you put a cichlid in there you can keep as many goldfish as you want in there for "life"

So many things wrong with that statement. I can see it now...a 50G with a Yellow Lab Cichlid and 40 Ranchu Goldfish...

I agree with Knifegill, definitely have some Pothos in there no matter which direction you go ;)

cichlid statement doesn't make any sense. You put a goldfish in there you will see it all the time as they fear nothing. The cichlid will cower in some corner or behind something and you will never see it.

The guide is 20 gallons for first goldfish, extra ten gallons per extra goldfish. So in a 50 you could do 4. But these are all just guides and it really depends on the water quality. Water quality has a bigger impact than tank volume. Depending on the water changes 2 fancy goldfish are too many for a 75, and 7 in a 55 are fine. If you can keep the nitrate concentration under 20ppm before water changes you are fine chemically, then it is just physical space.

IMO, goldfish should be kept out of anything smaller than a 75. I have a foot long shubunkin, and it woudl feel so cramped in a tank that small.

my goldfish is in with several SA/CA cichlids that are almost as big as him.

Long bodied and round bodied (fancy) are two very different situations. I wouldn't put long bodieds in less than a 125, something with a footprint of at least 6' by 18". The ideal setup for fancies is a 75 since they do get large and like to school. I think if doen right though they can work well in a 50 IF and only IF the water quality is maintained.

One air stone would fix that problem. I recommend a strong air pump on ANY goldfish tank. It will greatly help with aeration and many of them love to play in the bubbles.
