And I have to disagree. Like I said before you're comparing something you can control to something you can't. It's like comparing apples to oranges. If my gun is not in it's safe it can't crawl away, hide behind a wall for days at a time and then come out one day and shoot me while I'm watching TV. What do you think will become illegal first? Guns or owning venomous reptiles? I think you already know the answer to that one.

I suppose you are right, these two items cannot be compared accurately but in the defense of my snakes, they are not going to be able to escape from the cages that I keep them in and are just as safe as a gun in a locker.

And unfortunately, I think I do know the answer to that one. I suppose people are more afraid of an animal that could put you in the hospital than a gun that could kill a huge number of people...oh well. I have just never understood guns i suppose like many people do not understand my keeping of hots...

To each his own.

Safety is the key. I've grown up shooting guns since I was very little and I learned the proper way to handle them and what not. I'm sure that's how it works with people who want or do own HOTs. I'm glad you have your snakes in a safely secured setup.

And by the way, I have handled and worked with venomous reptiles before so I do have some experience on the subject. ;)

I have no problem with people owning venomous reptiles. The thing is that scares me is that here in PA any numbskull with money can walk into a pet store or reptile show and buy a HOT animal and be on their merry way. If I have to have a background check to purchase a gun then why not these people?

I was forced to vote "No way, that is insane!"... As I would never want to keep a Ven Snake, but I do not consider it "insane" to do so. It's just not an inconvenience I'd want to deal with...

100% agree with you, plus I know Im going to be prehaps criticized for this but I also think that some kind of inspection by experienced hot keepers is needed before someone´s private facility is acepted for proper hot keeping.

No I am not, but yes I would. Personally I like the eurasian vipers, some african vipers and most arboreal pitvipers. Not really into elapids but appreciate their beauty all the same. There are a few nice rattlesnakes though too.
If you like european vipers you have a few species very small ones, that are pretty much harmless (unless of course your alergic...) and can easily be kept with normal safety precautions

yeah, they are sweet. Vipera berus, our only native, you need paperwork proving they are cb I believe. I imagine they have the "weakest" venom but I'm still not going to want to be bit by one.

There are some beautiful ammodytes locale/varients and I've always loved latastei. Either way, getting a dwa licence is a pipedream really until I have enough disposable income to obtain one, and have my own residents. Can't imagine there are many landlords who would be stoked to have venomous reptiles on their property.

Being in Australia the only vens I can legally keep are natives. I have kept some baby Death adders and a red-belly black (Pseudechis porphyriacus) for a short while and am in love with the black snake (Pseudechis) family. Our permit system is fairly difficult to negotiate so I am currently waiting on that process before I can get any. When I do the only limit on me will be how much space I have since I am rapidly running out of room to house everything.
