Fish dont need lighting. Daylight will do. Lights are for plants, and for us to look at the tank.

Might work if your tank is next to a window or in a room that has windows...but not for someone whose tank isnt.

Unless you have a planted tank you want to use as little light as possable or you'll end up with a bunch of alge

Using the wrong light will cause you to have algae problems, but Id say its more based on the amount you feed and your water parameters. In my big tank, they are on for 14 hrs and I have no algae problem. On my smaller one, its on 11 hrs and I have no algae. I think that old standard florescent lights will cause an algae bloom more than any other type of light.

I have only 1 plant but it dosent really get to grow cuz my Gt keeps pulling it outa the ground. Ill just keep the lights on a timer from 3pm to 9pm or somthing like that.

I'v got most of my tanks in my livingroom, so I'm surrounded by glass.
I used to go to work about 5am, and went to bed around 1am.
The lights were on for 20 hours per day.
Nowadays they're out from 1 till 7am, so they're on for 18 hours a day.
No problems with any kind of algae.

It's because the fish I keep are here for my fun.
I'm trying to make life easy for them, but the dammage has already been done.;)
And besides, they are flourishing.:headbang2

And plants grow bigger/better/faster.
