I have decided i what to change one of my tanks around .
What i am wanting to do is be completly changing the stock and the look of one of my 120Gal 4x2x2Foot tank to a Semi - planted Angel Fish tank along with Tetra , Barbs and other schooling fish .

So what i would like to ask is -

How many Angel fish do you think i could fit ( comfertible ) in the tank ?

Any other thing i should need to know about please post . Things like tank mates with Angel's ( was thinking along the lines of Barbs, Tetra's , Danio's , Cories and others ) , the best plants to use with them and what ever else you think i should know , think about .

I had four angels in a 56 oceanic with others and the only time there was a problem was when they bred. As far as tank mates make sure that they can't fit into the angels mouth when large, there mouth is deceptively big. Mine have been/are roommates with discus, BGK, aro, TSN, juruense, clown loaches, fire and tiretrack eels, plecos, cories, EBJD, mollies, buenos ares tetras, lf rosy barbs, oscar, and bichirs. Tank is fairly well planted. Tall plants such as val look good with them and large swords are nice as spawning site if you get lucky.

Just been looking on the net and found these plants i like , thinking of putting in the tank .

Crinum Thaianum
Giant Torta
Hairgrass
Red Vallis Spiralis
African Tiger Lotus
Aponogeton Boivinianus
Aponogeton Ulvaceus
Anubias Barteri
Crypt Ciliata
Echinodorus Barthii
Anubia Nana
Lilaeopsis Brasiliensis
Pygmy Chain Sword
Sagittaria Subulata
American Pennywort
Water Lettuce

Most likely not all of them , but a couple of large groups of them , Something like 1 or 2 Background types , 2 or 3 mid' and 2 types of foreground . Not 100% sure about the foalting ones ever .

What you think ?

Bump .

Any help out there ?

i was thinking on about 8 Angels , good or bad ?

Hi there... I have the same tank as you and it is evolving into an angel and orangehead geo tank.. I have had angels in the past as well but am no expert.
I've found the issues with angels mostly occurs when they mature and start to pair up,, Then they become little devils.. they can kill other tankmates and get very aggressive with the other angels as well... they are cichlids after all and their personalities do vary. When young they will play nice and are fun to watch as they school. So just be aware that you may at some point have to decide between keeping the pair or pairs or keeping the others in the tank... a 4ft footprint is not very big when you are fleeing for your life LOL..:ROFL: I would start with a school of 8 or 10 with plans on maybe removing some as they grow and pair.. You want to figure about 10 gallons per adult angel after they get some size on them.. I'm guessing my adult koi angel is bigger than my hand and about 8 or 9 inches with the long veil tails..
For tankmates be careful that you choose ones that can tolerate the angels love for heat (80-82 is really best imo altho folks keep them in lower temps).. and that they are not fin nippers... IME most barbs are fin nippers.. also I feel they should not be zippy fish.. angels most of the time are slow movers and lots of very speedy tankmates can be stressful to some angels..
There are quite a few angel web sites, such as the angelfish forumII, you can visit and get lots more info and I believe Steve at AngelsPlus who is an excellent source has valuable info on his site..
As always a lot depends on the aquascaping and the temperment of the individual fish.. Good luck with your tank.... Sue:D

Wow , thanks for that .

I dont think i will be setying the tank up for another couple of weeks until i am 100% sure on what i am happy with , ( how Angels , tank mates , plants and the rest ) .

So if you or anyone has anything to add please do .

I didnt reilese that they pair up when mature and would start been aggresive with other tank mates .

Not neccesarily so don't turn your back on Angels they are peaceful creatures that are gorgeous! I have 2 angels in a 30gallon so you could keep at least 6-7 Angelfish in your tank. for a high quality tank (like yours) i would suggest finding Altum Angels which are another formation of the Pterophyllum scalare their scientific name is the Pterophyllum altum. I would most definitely try to find them as they are rare to come by. They are harder to breed than the Scalare which are the normal ones so that means less breeding and less chance! Altums can be confused with Scalare so make sure it is actually an Altum before you buy it! good luck!

Hi again...
Please don't be turned off from angels by the fact that quite often angels become aggressive after they pair off. A lot of cichlids do.. You just need to be aware that this may happen.. I have angels in the geo tank (120gallon) and have an adult by himself in the 29 with tetras etc. The bigger the tank the more apt they are to get along or have enough space/territory for themselves.. Please also do some reading up on them.. They are wonderful graceful fish and a trip to watch.. They look especially beautiful swimming thru plants and driftwood in a school. I highly recommend them but I also recommend some research on your part.. Good luck with your tank Sue:D

Thanks alot , im still wanting them but it might be a little longer wait , as i could be using the tank now to growout some Lima Catfish which will end up in my pond i am in the middle of making and a couple of PBass maybe for the pond .

But i will deffently will get some Angels and make a semi-planted Angel fish tank along with a load of school fish .
