how many in a 180g???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I must say Bderick has a nice 180Gallon setup. I only think that works cuz there are no decorations in the tank for the fish to claim as territory, as well as I dont think I see any Pairs of fish which would help alot with aggression as well. If there were landscape to that tank it could be really hard to keep half those fish together.

No name calling aloud.

viejas dont like each other...
and what idiot is behind the philosophy 16 10" in a 180 gallon?
its usually 10" of cichli per 50 gallons.
so realistically you should only have 8 monsters in there if you would like to overstock it.

I think I'd tame down the "idiot comments" a bit. No need. I actually don't think he's too far off. Some like yourself have your guidelines and rules, others like myself have a different opinion. Usually 10" of cichla per 50......what the hell is that a quote from a book? You can put as many as will get along, with whatever maintenance you enjoy or don't mind doing. Check out Bderick's 180 in his sig...it's killer.

I hope he meant a 9-10" Argentea, not 9-10 of them; certainly hope he can count how many actual fish he has :p

i suppose if you believe the 1 inch of fish length per gallon, 18 10 inch fish would be just right...

I think it really depends on what type of fish you stock. I have a 125 gallon tank that i feel is over stocked with 2 Pearsi/11 and 8 inches, 1 Nourisatta 8 inches, 1 Nicaraquense 8 inches, 1 Altifrons 5 inches, 1 V. heterospilum 5 inches but for the most part aggression is down and i don't have all tank busters. I like to mix large fish with small to medium sized fish, that way i can have more fish. I should thin the tank down to take some presure off the bio-load but they all seem to get along great. I would say with a 180 gallon tank you would get away with 8 to 10 monster fish but you will have aggression problems.

1 inch per gallon rule is properly explained here, and it works on the cubic inches of fish, not just length.

I would never put 180" of fish in a 180Gal. I know you didn't suggest that ;)

I've got 10 stone cold killers (see sig) in a 190 and they seem to get along just fine and have for the last nine months. And yes, they're all big.:)
