ive searched and searched but haven't found the answer to this question:

how many liters/gallons of media does the AC110 hold?

i need to know because i plan to fill one of my 2 ac110s up with purely Eheim substrat bio media. im not sure how many liters i need to buy..:(

thanks

Hmmmm.......let's see.......why don't you drain one and see how many 1 liter bottles (or even a measuring cup!) of water it takes to fill it back up! :D

not the same...water will fill parts that media will not enter. basically...im asking for the right amount of media to buy.

i have the sponge mine and still can fit 6 of the half size bags of the aquaclear brand media, without sponge would be quite a bit...

Rough estimations... I would suggest it will hold 1.3 gallons of bio rings/balls...

With all bio, and no pre filter, it is gonna be a hassle cleaning all of the detritus, out of your media. If you really want to do it that way, I would suggest adding a sponge prefilter to your intake. As per your question, empty, 2.5 liters would do, since you said substrat specifically...I am pretty sure they sell it by the liter.

I've done this with other HOB's & trust me, you want the sponge prefilter on the intake & keep that intake away from the substrate. The prefilter & HOB full of bio works great, but I also add a polishing floss pad on top of the bio.

lol!!!

im not gonna just dump media in the HOB lol!! that would suck!! im going to put the media in paint strainer bags. similar to what the AC biomax comes in when u buy the ac110. basically, im just super sizing the biomax media bags and using my own media.

thanks for answering my question! ill buy 5 liters. :)

I am wondering…

What is the situation that requires such a bio filter?

In many years of fish keeping I’ve never once had a mature (cycled) tank not have enough surfaces to house a sufficient amount of bacteria despite the fact I have never used any sort of special bio media/filters.

If a tank has zero ammonia/nitrites… what more can a bio filter do? Unless it is filled with one of the produces which claim to colonize nitrate removing bacteria (which Eheim substrat does not).

a situation where im the one who chooses the filtration ;). my 120 gallon has an Eheim 2028 pro 2 and a Fluval FX5, both of those filters are filled with purely biomedia. this has worked out very successfully. so i plan to do the same for my new tank with the duel ac110. i will use the sponge in one of them.
