How many MFK'ers use UGFs?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have it for my 140 and never had any issues.

IMO, if you already have a bubbler going in the tank, and have gravel, you might as well have an UGF too and get a whole lot of extra filterization out of what you already have.

BTW- I prefer bubble power over powerheads for UGF's.

I use them with PH's on the riser tubes on my QT tank and 40g.

An excellent filter IMHO, not to mention is provides and excellent water flow and never any cold spots in the tank. Their only draw back is creating nitrates from all the gunk that accumlates under the plates. I just broke down my 40 several months ago to remove all the "stuff". It was a PITA but the fish were back home within a couple of hours.

I had an UGF on my 55 gallon goldfish tank for years. Eventually all of my fish were dieing and I didn't know why, I was doing 75% water changes and vacuuming the bottom every week. After all the fish died, I was taking the tank apart and found balls of detritus the size of my fist underneath that weren't coming up during the regular cleanings. This was before I knew about the nitrogen cycle, but I assume all the cumulative junk caught underneath made the nitrates out of control. I'll never use one again.

I'm installing an rugf in my 220g right now so we'll see how that goes. I test the water twice a week now.
