How many of you intervene when your fishes get into a fight

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
In my tank, USUALLY, when a fight starts, other fish come get in the middle of it, or attack one of the ones fighting. Pretty sure they all want to make sure that no one fish gets too dominant, so they get involved in every fight, which pretty much makes them stop fighting.

Only time I have a problem is when one fish, for whatever reason, becomes the true undisputed top of the pecking order, and starts chasing EVERY fish in the tank. I just removed a Zonatus that got like that. I'll maybe try and re-introduce him back into the tank in a couple weeks and see how it goes.

I had a Breidhori that kept the Zonatus in check, but he got sick and died on me. Ruined the whole balance of power in the tank.

Wow you had to move him...kind of not suprised.

Im done mixing cichlids. For me too much work and not a.large enough tank. Dont really like one fish per tank so far mixing them with non cichlids SOMETIMES works depending on the tank mates and size of the tank...atleast for me other get it to work (im jeleous lol)

I let my fish know I'm the boss. But yeah I've chased fish with my hand or net. Doesn't really work for me. I'll time out the fish in a separate tank for a couple weeks. Usually this re-sets the balance.

I heard that fish know new introductions to the tank because of proteins in their slime coat from lets say another tanks water. Transitioning a fish by acclimating it with the intended tanks water without introducing the fish straight out or using water from the tap in a quarantine tank allows the new introduction to "blend" in and not be harassed by the occupants.

I have been guilty of using a net or my hand to chase around an overly aggressive fish more than a few times lol.

It's always a challenge. I moved the Zonatus to my 125, now my Midas and Blackbelt are teaming up on a Fenestratus. One on each side of the tank, Fenestratus in the middle. He's gonna have to come out, too. :) I might end up with a Wet Pet in a 540 gallon tank at this rate!

That's alright, though. I'll put the Zonatus back in, and whoever can live with him stays. Whoever can't live with him goes. If that's 3-4 fish, so be it. So long as my Argentea doesn't get hurt, I'm good.

All I know is a fish net won't help at all in my tank.

Yeah your argentea are awesome. You need a net thats used for swimming pools.

Glad that the zo is going back in though....means i still get to see vids of him

I generally only get a bit of fighting between males and females, as yet the only real issues have come from the jags when they would except certain fish. if its male and females then i leave it they all have plenty of hiding places to get away from each other so if its gets too heavy females generally run and hide. its easier to stick to pairs in each tank or Sp per tank.
