How many of you mess with the LFS employess?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i dont tell them to get me the wrong fish but i dont tell them if they charge me too little. like when i got live rock it was labeld like seven bucks a pound and i got 7 pounds the lady only charged me for a pound she didnt even put it on the scale.

i cant wait till the day he knows the fish and is like no thats actually a midas, sorry

I have had them give me fish and marked the price of a cheaper fish in the tank.. best time that happened was at thatfishplace tank had 4" altifrons and 3" common plecos I asked for a geo and he wrote it up as a pleco..... I play arround with them sometimes let them tell me info and let them think they are right then laugh but that's the extent of it....

THIS KIND OF THING HAPPENS TO ME ESPECIALLY WITH CORY CATS THAT ARE MISLABELLED IN MANY AQUIRIUM SHOPS. IF THEY ARE SELLING A FISH THAT I KNOW IS RARE AND DESIREABLE AND THE PRICE OFFERED IS MIS QUOTED I STILL BUY THE FISH FOR THE LOW BARGIN PRICE AND ONCE THEY ARE BAGGED AND PAYED FOR AT THE COUNTER I POLITELY TELL THEM OF THERE MISTAKE IN THE PRICE. I MIGHT NOT VISIT THAT STORE FOR SEVERAL MONTHS THEN GO BACK ONLY TO SEE THE SAME THING DONE AGAIN AND AGAIN......

KNOWLEDGE IS THE KEY.......

Wow ,i guess were lucky here. All our LFS have little pictures with size and etc.. on the tanks.. I guess that way they can hire Morons and still help people...

maybe you should help them learn by pointing out the correct fish. next time somebody asked them for a convict they're gonna try to give them a midas. Then somebody will come on here bashing an employee fro trying to give them a midas cichlid when they asked for a convict. Just a thought

Here's how it goes at an LFS-you have to be a generalist. Where I worked, everyone had a different area of expertise, and we worked together. If you throw 8 types of Madagascan cichlids in front of me, I wouldn't know which way is up. If you want to build a relationship with a store (which I guarantee pays off in the end) it takes a little give and take (and not taking as in ripping off). I learned a ton of fish wisdom from customers when I worked there, but I guarantee my general knowledge about the store trumped all. On the cory cat response-It really is a pain when you get a shipment of 10 types of corys in and a couple of labels get switched around.

One more thing before I get off my box... If someone has something you want, don't feel entitled to it. It's a hard living running/working for a LFS. Give these people the money they ask for what you want without the BS. This seemingly innocent thing has got me kinda steamed...

Let me straighten up a few things.. I havent bought a fish from a LFS around here in over a year. And we dont have any true LFS around here, everything else is chain stores (all in one package) Since I started understanding fish I buy everything over the internet from your MFK Vendors and from people on the MFK in the classifieds. But I did this back a year or so ago when I did buy them.

I used the Midas for an example. That wasnt exactly what the fish was or anything. As I said before in the first post (an example).

It was a little late last night and I was having a little too much labor day or morning after fun :) But I have done that back when I first started learning about fish, not since I have become truely dedicated to the hobby with large tanks and ponds and such. Just wanted to know if anyone does that regularly, but most of you guys probably have stores around you that knows what they are doing..

In order for me to find some good fish stores I have to drive 3 hours into cincinatti, nothing but crappy chain pet stores around here. (thats why I buy over the internet)

Just wanted to clear things up that Im not going around to all the chain stores confusing employees..

I agree with the second poster though. It's still wrong. Honestly, so what if they don't know which fish is which. I kinda like less nosy/knowledgable lfs employees. It's when I'm buying a 4" fish and they start asking me about tank sizes that really gets me frustrated. They don't know me from the other fools that come in stuffing oscars into 10g's but damn it's a pain.
