I am going fishing this weekend with the hope of grabbing some pumpkinseeds for my 75 gallon. I was wondering how many could realistically live forever in a 75 gallon tank. I am thinking 5-6. These would be the only inhabitants of the tank

Thoughts?

Pumpkinseeds can reach over 10", which means you probably wouldn't want more than 3-5 in the long run. Maybe even less if they grow big.

i agree with fisher. 3 sounds like a good number...might leave a little room incase you want to add something new down the road....just a thought...enjoy your pumpkin seeds!

Its your tank put whatever u want in there.

I agree, but I want to make sure the space is suitable for this fish. I am thinking of overstocking a bit to calm down on agression, so we'll see what happens. Also, I live in MA, where wild Pseeds rarely get over 7". I doubt I will catch them all at once, so I will have a chance to gauge the situation as I go. I am going to try to get them all around 5" to start.

Would love a bullhead, but I think 75 gallons would be too small, though again, wild bullheads around here are usually well under a foot full grown. Not sure what putting them in a tank would do to that average though

5-6 per Brian Zimmerman- to whom I've been talking to about stocking a 55g with green sunfish,.

Pumpkinseed's have 'tude like the greens, so to spread aggression like african cichlids a bit of overstocking helps maintain relative peace..

I'm with those who suggest slight overstocking, go with 5 or so. Though they can reach 10" in captivity it is more likely they'll reach 6-8". I would try to have 1 male and several females. Males will fight for territory with other males and if you have too few females the males with harass them, even to the point of killing them. Females are fairly non-aggressive IME.

This time of the year, sexual identification shouldn't be to much of a problem, the males should be in their breeding colors. Having said that, overstock if you are going male. They will be more colorful, although more agressive. If your going this rout, keep all males, about the same size, and do 6. Lot's of action in the tank, but make sure there are plenty of structure to break up lines of sight and to provide the subdominate males a place of retreat. The other option would be to go with ONE male, and 3-4 females. Less color, less action, more peace. You could of course go with all female, but then you would be missing the color.
Pumkinseeds can be very agressive. I've had several, and they all displayed varying degrees of aggression. One 6" pumpkinseed killed a 14" bass in my tanks. Overnight from introduction, beat the living tar out of it. Then, the two that grew up in my 55 with a larger bluegill don't pay him any mind, unless he shows aggression towards them. Then, they woop him. Given my experience with these fish, do one of the above stockings. If you wanna experiment past those recomendations, feel free, but I have been keeping pumkinseeds for about 20 yrs now, in all kinds of combinations.
The catfish thing could work, but most bullheads would outgrow a 75. You would need to consider upgrading to something bigger for them. Way bigger. 24" width is what you would need.
I've kinda specialized in centrarchids, if you have any more questions, please feel free to ask! Also, we want picks when you pick em up!
Use worms, squeze down the barb on the hook, and have fun! Collecting your own natives is the coolest way to keep fish. I have my sons first fish ever in one of my tanks, that bluegill means alot to both of us.

Just a follow up. I went fishing a few weeks ago and caught three fish. 2 Bluegills and a Pumpkinseed. They are in my tank now, and adjusting well. Still will only eat live food (minnows, grubs and nightcrawlers mostly), but I am trying to get them on pellets.

I plan on going out again this weekend and trying for a few more pumpkinseeds. I had trouble the last time, as the buggers kept stealing my bait. Went through about 20 trout worms to get the three fish (I really am not a good fisherman).

Tank is currently setup in the basement, so no pics yet, I want to wait until I bring them all upstairs and get everything set up properly.
