How many pellets are to much?

Thank you all very much for your input, it is much appreciated. He is no longer eating the 6mm NLS pellets he decided he no longer wants sinking food. He is now eating on an alternating schedule of Hikari, Chingmix, Hikari, Chingmix and seems to be doing ok. After the storm when we lost power two days for about 12 hours each day he was very faded from his tank temperature dropping. He is doing quite well his colors are back and a deeper red then ever. I am worried lately his poop has been gray (it's definitely not white) I am afraid it is hexamita so I have dosed his tank with epsom salt @ 1 tablespoon per 10 gallons. His food is also being soaked in it prior to feeding. He chose not to eat it yesterday but today has since changed his mind. His appetite and energy are still good so I am hoping to catch it early. I am feeding him twice a day about 6-8 pellets per time. Any other advice/tips are appreciated.

To add some more advice, stop feeding chingmix. It has too much protein and not good for his digestive system. Hikari is ok.
You can get him to eat NLS again by starving him, but it sounds like your FH might have hex. Could also just be stress. Your doing the right thing by soaking his pellets w/ RD's method. Just do water changes everyday and worst case scenario add some Metro in the tank if he's not showing any progress.

Also, like RD stated, the 6mm NLS was too big, just break them in half and he might eat them. The garlic could have helped prevent parasites. Good luck.

Hey, thanks for your input, I guess I should have updated here to and not just my progress thread. I did give up on chingmix, the risk/reward was not great enough to keep using it. I stopped using Hikari as well he is strictly back on NLS. I'm not so sure the 6mm pellets are to big it's what he eats now 3-4 in a shot. After that he spits them out, which I'm guessing he doesn't like the taste or he's full. As far as the hex is concerned I treated the tank with 1 tablespoon of epsom salt per 10g. He got food soaked in it for 5 and all seems well again. Good color, good appetite so I'm glad that worked well. Thanks for your advice.

The umbee male in the following vid is pushing 16", and still eats the 3mm NLS.

As previously stated 6mm is too big for a fish the size of yours, but if you insist on feeding it so be it.

I have trusted all your advice thus far, and will continue to do so. I have 3mm pellets still, could you approximate an appropriate amount? I am feeding twice a day currently. Also do you feel that the food with thera+ garlic is better?

Exactly how many is difficult to say with certainy as amount is dependant on the energy level of each fish. The more calories the fish burns, the more they need in the way of food, especially when in the growth stage. You could start with maybe six or seven 3mm pellets, twice a day. I personally wouldn't bother with the TherA, the regular Large Fish formula costs a bit less, and will get the job done just as well. (it also contains garlic) I generally only feed the TherA with new fish, or fish that for whatever reason require a bit more conditioning.
