We recently picked up a pearl scale cichlid a type of geophagus it is a real nice looking fish. How come you never hear much about them. They are supposedly mild mannered and have nice color I thought they would be more popular than they are. Does anybody have 1 or more or any thoughts why they are not seen more.

I have a geo, I think they are awesome. He is in a community tank and I use sand as substrate , he likes to find food in the sand.

Im assuming your talking about G. Brasiliensis. They are very popular. Their common name is Pearl cichlid. Pearl scale cichlid is a different fish altogether which is also known as the Texas cichlid. G. Brasiliensis dont look like your normal "sandsifter". I personally love them but my large male recently died.

Theyre beautiful fish and I had a breeding pair where the male was 12" if not larger. very peaceful though, heres some pics

Yes I am talking about the brasiliensis thought they were'nt very common as I have never seen them here in Alberta. Would love to get a pair the one we have was given to us and I assume it is a male. Right now he thinks he is a JD and swims with our pair of them and they seem to like him. Does anybody know of any stores carring them in the Calgary Ab. area?

They show up from time to time in these parts, Bill. I saw some a couple of months back in Calgary (at Pisces) but I have no idea if they still have some in stock or not. As I recall they were not listed on the tank as Brasiliensis.

IME the males can be very aggressive, even when smaller/younger.

Thanks I 'm not sure how soon we will be in Calgary again but we always stop at Pisces when we are there so will take a boo. Will check Riverfront closley to as he has a huge selection there never know what you'll find. I have seen dovi's,trimacs, peacock bass and lots of other fish there.
