How many piranha?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Six red bellies sounds like a nice number.
I'm thinking of placing a large, high piece of driftwood with some anubias right in the middle of the tank creating somewhat of a wall so the fish would be able to get away (or at least out of sight) from each other.
It's the waterparameters I worry about, I don't really like the idea of trying to change them since I guess the fish would get a shock from the new hard water at every waterchange.
But if it's true they do adapt to the harder water I'm happy to give it a shot.
Thanks a lot for the replies.

1 piranha = 30
2 = 50
3 = 70
4 = 90
5 = 110
6 = 130
7 = 150
8 = 170
9 = 190
10 = 210
11 = 230
12 = 250
13 = 270

1 piranha is about 30 gallons, every piranha added after that needs an adintonal 20 gallons.

seems to me some of ypu are ignorant, seeing every one is saying 6 - 8
according to what i said. thats corect. and according to you, its not good, hummmm ponder that. may want to qoute others and say someting also. just my oppion

( despite the tank i would still do 8 ) blah blah thanks to high. . . . . . . .:screwy:

no offense pevine, but i think Bderick made a valid point. the volume of a tank is worthless if the footprint doesnt cover enough area. that being said i would not put more than 4-6 adults in a tank w/ the given footprint.

if you are doing juvies...i would still do no more than 6. you have to assume they will all make to adulthood.

I did not say you were wrong on this tank. For this one you lucked out. According to your chart though;

a 110 gallon 48" x 18" x 30" tank could house five 10" RBP:screwy:
a 150 gallon 48" x 24" x 30" tank could house seven 10" RBPs:duh:
I supose you believe you could actually keep 2 adult RBPs in a 60 gallon cube tank which is 24" x 24" x 24".
Think about it what kind of ...:lipsseale would keep a 10" fish in a 30 gallon tank, needs a minimum of a 75g (48" x 18" x21")

So again, without consideration of the tank's dimensions, anyone would have to be "ignorant" to follow your chart.

Ignorant huh?? If your going to go calling someone ignorant, you may want to proofread your own sentences.:)

Say he got your magic number, Pevine.

No casualties due to cannibalism, or sickness.

That's more fish than would be comfortable in that tank. By the time they're too big to have that many, you're attached!!

If you're not attached by then, you're a fish haver, not a Fish Keeper!!

If you're going to ENCOURAGE cannibalism by promoting higher numbers than what would be in the best interests of the fish, then why post here?

I don't know where your information came from, but as you stated the other day, you keep "A" piranha. That means there is no experience there with keeping shoals.

I know I have no room to talk, considering I have 1 piranha myself, but I know when to concede to someone with more personal experience than myself. I'm with the more experienced keepers on this one.

It's this "It's just a fish" attitude you're showing as of late that gives piranha's a bad reputation, and every other type of fish a lack of respect that they all deserve!!
