How many polys??

Devil's advocate here: why is it when people ask how many bichirs can be housed in a 75/90/110 gallon tank I always read 3/5/8/10 bichirs? Why? Assuming the 72"X18"X19" tank is used for upper jaw species bichirs only (except weeksii & ornates), and assuming filtration is up to par (BIG ASSUMPTION HERE), water changes, good varied diet, etc. -- why wouldn't you be able to HAPPILY house lets say 20 or 30 bichirs? Bichirs in large numbers tend to do very well together & it reduces aggression as well. Is 20-30 bichirs not reasonable here? I think it is. What are your thoughts?

I assume that most people just wouldn't be able to keep up filtration with 30 polys in a tank and the idea of so many at once would just feel like overkill to the ordinary. Although if I had the finances to do so I would load my 240 with polys

Yeah filtration would be pretty hard. I would think you need two fx5s and a 30 gal sump in my opinion. OP if you have that or can get that filtration cheap... get 30 Polys!!

This is a false perception. Half of the filtration set-ups in the cichla & ray forums would be WAY more than enough for 30 bichirs in this tank. And believe me when I tell you the tank will still look empty with 30 upper jaw bichirs in it! You will want more. :)

I am not telling the OP to get 30 bichirs. The OP mentions he may have to get rid of one or two of his bichirs because he wants to add more -- due to the advice he is being given. All I am saying is as long as you have good filtration, maintain those filters, do WCs, varied diet, etc, there is not need to get rid of any of your bichirs to get more -- add more -- you have the tank.

I agree. TBH Just add alot of biomedia and have a good mechanical. Having pothos or lucky bamboo will help with nitrates. Doing weekly WC should be no problem.

Haha true, I guess it all goes back to the mindset of the fish keepers. A lot of fish keepers would think of that as excessive, because everything we are set up to learn as noobs in the hobby is that more fish=needs more room so when the idea of having 20-30 of the same fish that can grow to 12"+(and in many cases bigger) in one tank it just seems a little absurd.

I've seen a guy with 5'x3.3'x3.3'. He has about 20-30 monster Bichirs. All are 20"+. He still has good amount of room. Super clean water.

Haha and that's the thing, only certain people realize that its not a bad thing to have so many polys at once and that its not hard as people would think to maintain. I myself would love 20 polys in a tank lol just no money to fork up at the moment.
