The Land where Fish Rule!
I would like to try bichirs for the first time and was wondering how many senegals could go in a 30 gal breeder with the dimensions 36in long x 18 in wide x 12 in tall. I figured this would be the perfect tank because of the width. I could also use a 33 gal (48 1/4 x 13 x 13) but i didnt think this would work since they grow 12 in long. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

You will need very good filteration and a good WC schedule, but I'd say 2... No more than 3.

yeah, i agree with stump. 3 sounds excellent, as long as you have good filtration and constantly monitor your water parameters for any problems.

Thanks guys! I have two other questions too: What is the typical growth rate on these guys and could I possibly keep bichirs (not specifically senegals, but most likely) in my 135 gal African Cichlid tank?

They'll probably reach 5-6" within several months and then slow down (each individual fish is different, but it stands true for the most part).

Cool, Thanks. I was looking at the "how many bichirs can go in a 56 gal tank?" thread a couple in behind me and now I am confused. The dimension of the of the 56 are 30L X 18W and my tank's are 36L X 18W. So my tank actually has more floor space which should equal more bichirs, but some people on that thread said he could keep 5 or 6. Where they just exaggerating? I am just trying to plan now so my future bichirs can have the happiest life possible. Also, if any one has tried keeping any bichir with Africans please share your experiences. I can't find a solid answer on that. The Bichir sticky says that African Peacocks are a compatible tankmate but it seems like most people say they arent?

Honestly, the amount of bichirs has little to do with floorspace when you are dealing with 30g tank. The footprint of the tank is great, but you have to remember it is still only holding 30g of water - which can get dirty very easily with a couple of decent sized fish in it.

With two or three full grown senegals I would recommend two or three 30% water changes throughout the week.

ok thanks for clearing that up. I figured since it is only a 30 it was more about ammonia build up than territory. Any to say about the Africans?
