How many Senegals can go in a 30 gal Breeder?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
When talking about African cichlids (or most cichlids in general), I leave my comfort zone... I am very limited with my knowledge in that area.

You'll have to have someone else help you out in that area. Good luck. :)

Just make sure the bichirs are able to get it share for food as most cichlids especially when keep in an african cichlid comm can out compete the bichirs for food. This lead to bichirs starvation and will try to snack on the cichlids if it capable of taking it down when the lights are off by doing a death roll.

Thanks for the replies. The feeding was what I was concerned about the most as my Africans arent too too aggressive, so I really don't think there would be any bullying. But when I feed them barely if any food reaches the bottom of the tank, which is where I assume the bichirs would be. So I would have to come up with a way to get them food (maybe feeding with tongs?) If any of you have tried bichirs with Africans please post your experiences and what you did to feed them.

Try feeding the african cichlids forst and when they are full drop some food for the bichirs to eat and turn the lights off. This way the bichirs are much more active and will go hunt the prepared foods and not the cichlids.

The problem with that is this tank is on a timer and the lights go off at midnight at which point, I am already asleep, otherwise that would be a great plan.

Just try the distraction method:

Distract your cichlids with a good amount of food on one side of the tank (to the point that they all go to eat at that side), and then drop some food for the bichirs on the other side. The cichlids should be distracted enough to not even notice (or care) about the stuff across the tank.

Ok thanks. Do you think any one species of bichir would do better than another with the Africans?

Not particularly, no... It's more dependant on the personality of the individual fish.

If you keep a single bichirs in a highly active fish such as cichlids it will just likely hide. Get more bichirs.
