How many known .sp of Polypterus are there?

Is Polypterus sp. Koliba a recognized species?
Polypterus bichir sp. "Koloton" ?

P. sp. Koliba or P. sp. anything are not recognised species, thats what the "sp." is for.

Also, P. endlicheri endlicheri is not a seperate species from P. endlicheri congicus, they are subspecies of the same species. Polypterus = genus name, endlicheri = species name, congicus = subspecies name.

So there are 11 species:
P. ansorgii
P. bichir
P. delhezi
P. endlicheri
P. mokelembembe
P. ornatipinnis
P. palmas
P. retopinnis
P. senegalus
P. teugelsi
P. weeksii

Vanimate is the question you are asking "How many known varieties [species, subspecies and un-named] are there?" or "How many un-named Polypterus sp. are there?"

What I was asking was "How many known varieties [species, subspecies and un-named] are there?" and "How many un-named Polypterus sp. are there?" total.

Yeah your right!
So 18 ;)

FYI on Koliba vs. Koloton

Up until recently, the 'Koloton' was actually sold as and with 'Koliba'. In fact, the first 'Koliba' Toyin imported into the US actually turns out to be 'Koloton'. It was only relatively recently that Toyin learned from his supplier that some of the 'Koliba' he's been getting were actually collected at a different spot (though I think the two places are geographically nearby). Anyway it seems the 'Koloton' has stronger contrast and slightly different arrangement of patterns than 'Koliba', but the distinction isn't that great. I still basically consider them the same for all practical purposes.
