So I have the 3 feet tank ( 3 feet in length by 1 and a half feet in width and height ).

The inhabitants are a Florida Gar, an Ornate Bichir and a Climbing Perch. How many spoons of salt am I supposed to apply to the water?

Thank you for stopping by.:)

a few less than it says for a 50 gallon tank

for gereral water conditioning go 1 tablespoon per 10 gallons of water, for diseases or recovery from wounds go 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons of water. Alot of people keep there fish at the higher dosage though without problems.

None..... salt is not needed in freshwater aquaria..... unless you using it to fight ich or infection?

its real good for stress relief

Salt is good for stress relief? Before I released the fishes in there, I added about 2 and a half spoons of salt. Not fully filling the spoon though. The tank they were in previously was very polluted as I waited for this new tank.

They are happy and swimming around now like there's no tomorrow. The reason why I apply salt everytime I do water changing is because of my Polypterus. I read articles that some salt should be added for Polypterus. And while Florida Gar is generally in freshwater and does move on to brackish, I apply it as well. Climbing Perch has tolerance for brackish too..

So this is my reason for adding besides for ick / disease prevention. My salt is not the plain salt but the one in light blue which is to help fungus prevention and so on.

My Polypterus just ate Gar's stools! isn't this bad?:irked:

My fish must be really laid back, never use it, and they are healthy, good growth etc....;)

In their natural habitats no CA/SA cichlids encounter anywhere near 1 TBSP per gal of NaCl in their water, so why use it in aquaria?

Just good old Lake Ontario water here....

Burt:)

A little salt as a tonic is a good disease preventative, don't over do it.
