How many sunfish should I stock in my tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Oh and just purely out of curiosity, could I ever keep a single pair of bluegills in a 75 for life? Because they're all over the place where I live but I've heard around that they might grow too large for a 75 but again I've heard that the ones here in mass would rarely grow a large as southern populations

I think you should do smaller sunnies, like orange spots. They get more colorful and get smaller than bluegill. You could keep 3 ospots for every bluegill.

How big is your pond and what are you feeding them? http://eet.env.duth.gr/Docs/Nestos_ws1/2_6.pdf {Sunfish are particularly prone to “stunting”. Lakes that have good spawning habitat but not much food
can produce swarms of small adult sunnies that never grow larger than 4-5 inches} quote is from a zoo.

16x11' with varying depths up to 4.5 feet. Feeding high quality pellets, shrimp/worms as treats. Not a perfect habitat but certainly not stunting them that much. Yes pumpkinseeds can reach 10" but 6" is most likely. An 8" fish would be a real score.

You can purchase Longear and O-spots online, a 75g is a good tank for a pair of Medium sized sunfish a big Madtom and some large shiners. The biggest and most colorfull fish you can get for a 75g. are Western Dollar and Northern Longear Sunfish, if you Get one male and Two females, a Stonecat and then put them all in with a couple steelcolor or Blacktail shiners or any of the large luxilus genus of shiners.

I wish! Orange spots are really beautiful but I havnt a clue where I would get some, I've never ever caught any here in Massachusetts

Sounds like your feeding them well and your pond is big enough for them.....about how many are there in the pond?
