  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
During summer months I would doubt that you have any problems, likely the heaters won't even run. You'll have to dosomething for the winter though.

How far is you elect panel from your garage?

Hey Brian! The panel is approx 4' from where the 300g would go (linear, same wall) and the 220g is about 14' (linear, around a corner).

Sounds like the general opinion is a warning not to do it though without a new panel and I'm SOL on getting permission from the landlord.

You don't need a new panel, just a 20amp circut pulled from the panel. Not hard to do yourself, I can help through PMs if ya like. Does the panel look like it has spare spaces for additional breakers?

Your first step would be finding a new breaker to install in the panel. This may be difficult depending on the brand and age of your panel.

NO!!!!!!!

Brand is "challenger". Unsure on age but the place is 3,000sqft with 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms if that gives you an idea? Fairly new home (less than 20 years I belive). Panel has one space available at the bottom right. Below is what is wired in already:
40-2 switches
30-4 switches
20-3 switches
15-9 switches

Challenger panels are no longer made. Doing some quick research it looks like Cutler Hammer make a breaker that would fit your panel. You could also open up your panel and see if any of the breakers are not being used.

This is dangerous, I would recommend de-energizing the panel first. Or get an electrician to come over and give you an estimate, you may be able to gather some info in that way also.

I don't plan on opening that thing any time soon. If the landlord gives me the go ahead I'll have an electrician check it out. Thanks for looking into it Brian. I really appreciate it.

No problem, good luck with it.

Justin: I did it when I ran a new wire for my 460 gallon. It isn't hard at all...the breaker basically just pop's right in...you will just need to figure out if you have any available space to add a new breaker (20 amp) then you can run a new line off of it and it will be didicated to just the tank....easy, peezy, japaneezy.. :) Just let me know if I can help bud...

As several people have idicated... it's not that hard...

You'll run all of the wiring before ever plugging your wiring in to make it hot...

You'll turn the power off to the box before getting into it...

So unless you cross wires in the box, which will be very obvious, there is basically no risk of shock.

If you do decide to do it yourself, I would read up on doing so on DIY websites thoroughly then join a DIY forum and takl to a few people who have ample first hand experience. That is not to discredit anyone's experience here, but having a whole forum of esperienced people reading and criticing the advice you are following may prove very valuable.

With proper education a generally compitent person should not have a problem doing this... and in this thread alone you've shown yourself to be at least generally compitent...
