How many tanks?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Currently I have:

29g FW Community
40g Salvini pair
55g African predator (ABK, Senegal Bichirs, etc.)
60g Cichlid odd couple (Polleni & Firemouth)
75g Severum pair + others
40g SW reef
40g Land hermit crab terrarium

I enjoy each and every one, but think it may be too much from a time and cost standpoint. I think I'd like to get down to: 1 Small FW, 1 Large FW, 1 SW, and 1 Terrarium.

Since I have no life, I have the time to take care of quite a few tanks:).
few of them contain fish, though.

alright *cracks knuckles*.

10 gal (2x)-family of spiny mice;)
10 gal- 3 juvenile pacman frogs (dividers)
10 gal- pair of juvenile African clawed frogs (soo to be moved to a 20:D)
20 gal- pair of leopard geckos
20 gal long- young milk snake (soon to be moved to a 55)
10 gal-baby map turtle
20 gal long- baby carpet python
20 gal- pair of musk turtles

15 gal-hermit crab

15 gal- armadillo lizard
40 gallon breeder- adult corn snake
29 gal- 7 exodons (on the lookout for more;))
20 gal long- 2 axolotl salamabers

I've restricted the list to include just tanks, as I also have several cages, ponds, and corrals.

ive got so many ive had to set up a auto water change system normaly it would take about 5 hours to clean them all but now it takes about 1 hour any one else set up a auto water change system

This doesn't include my dad's 30 gal hex, 55 african cichlid tank, or under-construction 300 gallon.

Right now, I just have a 150 and 75 set up. I'm getting rid of a couple of my bigger fish and the 150 and downgrading to a 75 and 55 for a while as I'll be graduating college in the spring and moving to wherever I can find a job. Once I've got a more permanent situation, I'll hopefully be setting more/larger tanks.

The most I've ever had at one time was 11

My optimal number is 2. One large and one small. Finances play a major part, and time the second constraint.

I had a friend tell me that 40 tanks is nice number for a breeding set up. He then told me it quits being a fun hobby when you get over 100 tanks and becomes a full time job. Our tanks are.

150g display with alittle bit of everything.
2 10g baby tanks
160 bow front clown knife ,ornate bichir 2 rd
35g guppy and neon
9 30g breeding tanks
150 rostratus tank
35g hopital tank
200g 4x4 giant gouramis.saddled bichir
65g breeding tank
120 tropheus tank
2 90g red empress and kendalis
180g tall tank
80gcube angel fish
90g ruby greens
230g oscar.jd,sevrum tank and a few more other tanks soon have over 40.

i have 75g tank with 4 Piranhas in it
10g guppie feeder / breeder tank
Just stepped into this hobbie a few weeks ago, plenty for me :)
Already addicted tho, im already looking into making a outdoor pond :P

Also, why would you ever want over a hundred tanks, open a pet store. almost animal hoarding lol

I currently have 4 tanks... although in the near future, i will probably only be running 2-3...

How many tanks is optimal?
I now have the following and considering I am new to this hobby I imagine some folks on here have much more, or have had.
What are your thoughts

5 Gallon feeder guppy tank
10 gallon red eared slider tank
30 gallon oscar and parrot tank
100 gallon cichlid tank

The answer will be different for each person and will be different during different times of that person's life. I have had as many as 11 and as few as 3, some are fresh water some are salt water, some are temporary QT tanks some are temporary grow out tanks, others are huge tanks that will be with me for most of my adult life.....

As long as the needs of your pets are getting met you are ok. When you have too many tanks to care for each of them properly its time to downsize.

You my friend, are not meeting the needs of your pets. Red eared sliders get to be 14" long. Putting one in anything less than 55 gallons is just plain cruel. They need room to swim and exercise, even a little one at 4" will not have that room in a 10 gallon tank. Ultimately even the 55 will be too small as they won't be able to turn around in it.

That oscar will need to move to its larger tank ASAP as well. A 4" oscar with a parrot in a 30 is an emergency holding tank not a place to let them be for a few months while you find a bigger tank. Speed up the finding a bigger tank please. And when you do, the turtle goes in the 30, the guppies get the 10 and you start looking for a larger tank for that turtle.

I do hope you have the right kind of lights for that turtle. Their bones won't grow properly if you don't as they require natural sunlight (or an artificial source that is of the correct spectrum) to process vitamins for bones. It makes me cry to see reptiles cared for with nothing more than a heat lamp in a tiny tank.
