I could see someone taking issue with editing photos, but using flash? lol

I was quite frustrated early on entering photo contests. I soon found out that voters in most contests are more interested in composition and content than they how technically correct the photo is. So I adjusted and had much more success once I understood what most voters value in a photo. Even then, it's hit and miss.

I'm getting their...Just slowely----
I certainly dont mind if they use them features..I did at first----But I am finally starting to see the light....

Not everyone has the luxury of cathing shots of shark from below either---

I could understand why your shots would rate so high...

Mine wasn't a shark, though. It was a side shot of an invert that anyone could have taken. Light was room the room itself, no flash, no tank light. It just happend to be this lucky shot.

I was just trying to show anyone could pull it off... even without fancy cameras and editing (although the rules on editing are pretty tight).

True man-
I'm really not trying to argue here-
It was just my opinions-

I totally understand what you are saying-
99% of my pics are non edited-non flash pics...I have excellent results with my pics as well----But they just dont compete with a good edited photo

Hello Akskirmish,

hmm ... you are right in some points ...

... some pics are edited to death.
... it's not the pic itself - the identification with the fish on the pic is quite important! One reason why blurry cichlid pics are getting more votes than crispy pics of other fish.

I also use flash. I have bichir/snakehead tanks which i have optimized for a mostly real ambience.
These tanks are dark - very dark. Full of plants. driftwood ...
... even NO cichlid tanks!

I#m not an absolute beginner in photography - but there are frontiers of working without flash. I've chosen my decision: I'm keeping predators - not holding up photo-tanks.

But one thing is important i think:

IT'S ALL FUN !!!

People steadily NOT speaking about the "best" - ok, they do, but ... are they the "best"?
Look at the music scene ... for example guitar players: Everyone is speaking about Clapton, Santana etc. ... but look for musicality, diversity, technique and overall-ability: What's about Steve Morse, Steve Vai? Two guitarists where even classical guitarists are doing "boah!!!,incredible ...".

As Frankieboy had sung: THAT'S LIFE !

Greetings

Uwe
