How many times should your filter your tank over

ya but after i posted this a guy had one asking about the same thing but feel free to post

5-8 times an hour for fresh water 8-11 for salt.

Depends on the type of filter and how much bio media you have in the filter for wet/dry filters i typically say 3-4x turnover rate is fine, for canisters i say 5-6x and for HOB anywhere from 7-10x is best.

However if you can achieve 0, 0, X (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate respectively where x is any value above 0) then any turnover rate beyond that will just increase current and thereby oxygenation. so as long as your getting healthy acceptable readings your turnover rate matters very little.

Some data I derived years ago indicated 1/12 per hour is the bare minimum for a mature system. Proper oxygenation will most likely dictate more.

I agree with sAroock, it mostly depends on your stock and water change schedule, but I always prefer to have at least 5.5-6x turnover regardless of the stock. On my 220 gallon I think I have about 7x, but it has a pretty big bio-load, and I still have to do 40-50% water changes weekly.
