How many times should your filter your tank over

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a 200 gal (7'x2'x2') with a wet/dry sump, 36W UV sterilizer and 7 goldfish (about 6-7 inches). I have a Mag12 (1200 gph) set up, where about 300 gph goes thru the UV and 900 gph goes thru the filter system. So its about 6x turnover, but a portion is recycled back to the sump via UV sterilizer. I also do a 20% water change weekly to keep algae from setting in and to keep the chemistry and tank temp from changing too much. I would do a bigger water change, but I'm a little lazy. I almost forgot, about 50 nerite snails doing a great job eating any algae on my plants (java ferns, anubias, etc).

I found that there are a lot of fuzzy variables in keeping a tank clean and fish happy. After some trial and error and more errors, I finally discovered a mix that works. With everybody doing their part in keeping the tank clean, I get to spend more time enjoying other things. (that is, if I did have other things to enjoy :duh: )

I already sort of asked this question. I feel the consensus is as on page one. That normal readings indicate your okay, however more turn over just increases current and saturation of O2 which of course is good. I am turning over 10-11 times an hour which I am fine with. I don't see the point in getting manic over trying to get 15, I doubt it would make a difference to anything useful...

Actually it just increases the current. The saturation index is temperature and pressure dependent, but has nothing to do with the amount of flow.
