How many times you do a w/ c in one month

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I usually do 85-90% water changes on all my tanks....once or twice a week, more often for juvenile fish that must be fed heavily. Eventually I'll get a drip system up on some of these tanks.

I don't see any benefit to doing small water changes instead, never have. As long as your tapwater remains fairly consistent from day to day it's not going to stress them, unless you're waiting a long time and letting your water parameters get completely out of whack before doing a very large change. As far as stress from the water levels dropping, if you do it often fish quickly get used to it, and many enjoy it and play in the new water coming from the hose. It's when you do large changes erratically that they're not expecting it and get stressed.

I'm a "teenie" so i suppose i know everything

Depending on the tank and motivation i do 40-70% WC up to 4 times a week. Water goes through an RO system, mineral replacement, and is temperature matched before adding. In a percect world i would run a drip system but i have no time nor effort. Other times I'm lazy, but my tank has pothos a large sump and additional filtration and a light stock

Keep in mind some discus breeders in asia drain the tank so low the disus lay flat on the bottom before they refill

In all my personal experiece i have never had a wc related death... Or any death of a significant fish in years (i don't have many though)

Gotcha, my bad... I guess I did use the word teenie loosley. Anybody can be ignorant, no matter what the age is. And the teenies today have all the knowledge at thier fingertips. I was just thinking back when I was a teenie before I ever had access to the internet, and just did what I thought was best. Through many, many years of reading magazine articles, asking store workers/owners questions, etc. I learned quite a bit. But when I found MFK, I have learned more in the last six years than I did in the 20+ years I have been keeping fish. I was just saying filter what you read cause not everything you read is the right way to do it.

Also I try to do once a week.
It dosen't always work, but I overfilter all my tank's and do as needed.

I try for 25-20% water changes once a week on all my tanks. Always vaccuum the gravel in the 75 gallon grow-out, those folks are MESSY! Will go closer to 50% once a month. I think I am going to go take a long hard look at the Setup subforum, would love to have less labor for the 300 gallon.

8 or more. Twice a week each 20% water change and I never get past 30% unless I am doing maintenance. I feel like it is my duty for my fish to look like this certain picture I saw here on MFK where the fish looked like they are floating in free space. Gravel vac every Wednesday or whenever I see that there are a lot of solids moving around. Half of my fish are messy eaters, all are heavy poopers.

Whoa I didn't realize everyone did water changes so frequently. I try to do 10percent changes weekly on my 4 grow outs. However I have sufficient filtration on all for grow outs. My 20 gallon brackish tank gets a greater water change percentage due to its smaller size.

Try to do 30-40% per week on most tanks. More on heavily stocked ones. Depending on water pressure and beer consumption, I've got the whole process down to ~2-2.5 hrs on my 50+ tank fishroom.
