went to the lfs and saw texas for 6 and saw another for 14 in a different tank and i ask them and they said it was a carpenter? ?

Hericthys Cyanoguttatus and Hericthys Carpinitis are the two species that are commonly confused. The true Texas Cichlid is H. Cyanoguttatus. H. Carpintis (not carpenter) looks different and is not the same, though there are some variants that are given names associated with Texas Cichlids. It can be a mess to sort through some time.

Herichthys cyanoguttatus, are your regular Texas...

Herichthys carpintis is the other...theres 3 known variants so far...Chairel, Escondido, and Vontehillo.

And then theres the man-made Red Texas.

To me they are all beautiful, even the regular Texas. Some people value too much what is "Sexy" and will throw around whats new and hot. Don't mind the kids

Some people use it as a common name for the whole genus as well. Much like 'convict' can refer to several species. I once saw Herichthys labridens 'Media Luna' refered to as a yellow texas before. Remember common names can be made up by whomever and uses can very depending where you are from. Sometimes they even vary LFS to LFS in the same city.

There is also the Lahillas to round off the main 4 that are in the hobby. There is also many more location based carpintis as talked about in this thread http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?278431-6-varieties-of-Herichthys-Carpintis. But thats a topic in itself.

Sorry Red Texas do not count. It's an FH guys. there are many variants out there. Till somewhat recently I had a group of rare H. Cyannogutattus "Santa Clara de Tecla" which looked different than what you see at the LFS or online.

Is it true that my understanding is that the green texas is the carpintis but people applied that name and in stuck. Now I know the carpintis do look different depending on there local.
