Just curious what all you guys think? Everyone agrees violent turbulent waters are present where they originate but where would you draw the line?

I'm in the process of setting up a larger growout. Tank is 4 by 3 by 1.5. Debating what to do as far as circulation... Return lines are mostly done, just don't know what to do for a pump.

Curious as to others opions on how much is enough and how much is too much?

i have a pretty strong current in fangs tank and most of the time he is hangin out in the calm spots. dont think u need to get carried away too much.

Ditto...my 4 little ones hangs out in the calm spot. My 3 larger ones before hung out in the calmer spot as well.

I have yet to see one that is right directly infront of the pump output doing exercise ;)

i heard that as younglings they live in calmer waters?
ive never had a hydrolycus that enjoyed being in front of a pump, mind you.
i think the key is to have a lot of oxygen in the water.

Agreed. I thought the best way to oxygenate the water would be a lot of surface agitation.

Gonna try 25x turnover dumped back in through 8 line lock nozzles above the waterline. Hopefully it'll work ok. Dead spots should be corners, piece of driftwood in the center to break up line of sight. Maybe some bigger smooth river rock for current pockets.

I guess if it ends up not workin I'm sure the Dorado will enjoy it.

good luck!
i have pumps in the tank for dead spots.

i am running about a 18-19 times turn over + i have a 500gph power head in my armatus tank. He seems to get behind the large rock in the middle out of the real fast current.

i'd say have enough in the middle current so that the fish are able to idle, casually flicking the tail once every 1-2 seconds.

areas naturally strongest at source, middle at midstream, low at other side of source. structures such as bog wood help seperate current flow and direct flow, good as a divider for back flow and feed flow for source

good idea to break up the low flow areas so fish have regions to call their own when need to rest.

play with it, can bounce off glass, aim different angles, if 2 sources aim stream different directions, or at one another, try different things to get the right outcome.

From my experience, I find that juvenile Hydrolycus tend to like a calmer waters. Even as adults, I don't think they stay in turbulent waters 24/7, probably only go there to feed? Just make sure there are calmer areas for them to rest.

I'd like to get a hold of a means to test dissolved O2 and see if its possible to manipulate it. They might not care for the current but maybe they'd enjoy the benefits.
