How much do lionfish cost?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How much would a lionfish cost me? Where can I get them? Tank size? Any possible tankmates? Thanks

-Andrew

If your LFS is af or anything in nj it's like $15 per inch a 7" volitans costs $100

I have researched lions a lot in the past few months, I am in the process of setting up a 75 gallon for 1 volitan lionfish.

Lionfish don't need much of a big tank because they usually float around, and they aren't very active. A lot of lions actually spend a lot of time in their cave. Volitans can get 14-16 inches while fuzzy dwarf lionfish can get 8 inches.

In my area lionfish happen to be very expensive... Juveniles are 40 and the medium sized ones are 60

I thought you said you were taking a break and weren't buying new tanks. Now you are looking at buying a fish that requires a salt setup and I'm sure you probably know nothing about

There's nothing wrong with wanting to know more about a fish...

Thats not true a lot of lionfish are pretty active the problem is that most people dump them in cramped living conditions, personally I wouldn't house a large bodied lion in a 75 gallon the minimum that I would suggest would be a 100/120 gallon tank because when you start adding rocks and forming caves you aren't leaving much turning space for the lion.

I think you would be much better off with keeping a P. Antennata or another hardy medium sized lionfish like a dwarf fuzzy or zebra lionfish which you could add more than one to make your tank more lively.

It's either 2 dwarf fuzzies or 1 volitan :) But the LFS I go to never has dwarf fuzzies :(
