just as food for thought;
A full-time worker making the minimum wage today would earn roughly $14,500 a year—about 40% below the $23,550 poverty line for a family of four.

Sorry.....even if you make a minimum wage of 8 bucks an hour you are making less than 20 k a year.
In CT, the paid minimum wage regardless of tips is 5.75! I make far more than 5.75...or 8 bucks for that matter and can barely make ends meet......if you can afford to eat out, seems you can afford to tip the person literally "waiting" on you.....

child care costs more than a minimum wage job could pay for. When I was in the work force, as a veterinary technician- full time, making $11 an hour, I cleared $75 a week after paying for child care (infant toddler care is extremely expensive). My husband also worked, for well over minimum wage, but it didnt' make any sense to us for us to pay someone to raise our kid when I was clearing so little.

On that note, I am just going to say it's not my responsibility to pay for anyone else's kids. Having kids is a choice, except in extreme circumstances.

Haha you'd love it here in California... I swear its like a competition to have more and more kids to qualify for as many things a possible. bus passes, free lunches k-12, college financial aid, all depends on the amount of kids that are in a family.

The minimum law doesn't apply to waitresses,waiters or barmaid, at least in my state. Heck at pizza hut here they only pay like 3 or 4 bucks an hour to waits because they are tipped employees. And I know several bar server/waitresses who only make a little over 3 bucks an hour. These type of employees are dependent on tips, so it's only right that someone who waits and serves my needs gets paid accordingly. If they are good they get a nice tip if not I leave a few pennies then they know they need to improve. And if it is really bad I leave a complaint with their boss.
To each their own, but if someone is going to physically take care of my needs and provide me with a pleasant experience I show my appreciation.
The only ones I have an issue with are like pizza delivery, they make minimum and then the pizza restaurant adds a delivery cost to your bill then the driver expects a tip when they are getting 2-3 bucks per delivery from the store they work for on top of their minimum wage.

from my understanding of the federal law, you guys are wrong. yes your states may pay tipped employees under the min wage. but if the employee's tip doesn't add up to the state's min wage, then the employer MUST PAY THE DIFFERENCE. so regardless, the employee will make at least minimum wage. and read my post below regarding tipping tipped employees verses non tipped

just as food for thought;

well, people in poverty is a whole other discussion.

we are talking about tipped employees pays here and a lot of people used the argument that they made way under the min wage so we need to tip them more generously because they work so hard for so little pay. which is false.

I think the guy/girl making min wage at the cash register, grocery store, flipping burgers or where ever, works just as hard and provide us a service so that we don't have to do it ourselves in one way or another. they don't get tipped. now we know all the facts, someone explain to me why tipped employees should get this special treatment???

Considering I have a daughter who works at Pizza Hut, a nephew who also waits there and several friends waitress at bars, I have first hand knowledge that what I said is FACT. SO, I AM NOT WRONG! I see it on an everyday basis.
Maybe yur interpretation of the federal law is flawed. Maybe it doesnt apply to every Individual state just as the minimum wage is different from state to state.
So you can believe what you will, that is what make this country great but FACTS are FACTS and you are blinded by your beliefs.
