How much do you tip your barber?

I always find, big tip or not, once they're comfy with you, they start doing crappy work. Then you gotta start nitpicking.
I notice when the shop is crowded or if there is heated discussion going on the cut might not be as good as the barber tends to get a little distracted from the task at hand and get caught up in the barber shop banter....I usually avoid all of that since I try to be there as soon as he opens in the morning.

I don't know about paying the barber extra so he'll keep you looking good...it's just a gesture of appreciation I guess.

I can accept this as a reason

where it goes wrong for me is the whole idea of, "take care of them and they'll take care of you" or "gotta keep them happy so they don't screw up"

are they not taken care of by you giving them business already? why the extra?

and even if you give a gesture of appreciation, do you not appreciate other services you receive?

last month I went out a couple of times to eat

once to ihop and another time to a steakhouse. I didn't tip at ihop but I did tip at steakhouse.

but only because the waitress let me know she took $8 off the bill. so I tipped her $5

now to me, that is how you earn a tip. give a discount. had she not took off $8, she would've gotten nothing. she took off $8, so I gave her $5. She saved me $3

you're taking care of him by giving him business since 'nam

why is it that you guys feel you have to give extra so that he'll keep you looking good?

would it be frowned upon if he did a great job and not get tipped? if so, why?

that's his whole purpose, to get paid to keep the customers looking good

I appreciate good, quality work is really all it boils down to. I'm stingy with who I gives my tips to, and I rarely give them out, but if I give you a tip, it's gonna be generous.

that's cool. I guess if you're gonna give away extra money, it should go to someone you really appreciated

this thread made me think back

my whole life I've always had people in my family who could cut hair. I have two cousins who did a lot of my hair cuts who were really good.

when I used to travel for a place I used to work I had to go to a barber like 2 or 3 times. this was maybe like 12 years ago. at the time I didn't know you were supposed to tip barbers so I didn't tip them. now I just shave my own head

I shave my head and pretty much keep it bald or close to it in the spring and summer and I tip myself very handsomely.
