Cheapest way would either be pellets or Shrimp/market prawns. When I had 3 arowanas, I would spend about $10-15 a month feeding just frozen shrimp.

Ditto. Except a $15 costco sized bag might last you ~3 months. All you have to do is cut up the frozen shrimp into bite-size pieces with a good pair of kitchen shears. You can also stuff the shrimp with pellet pieces and hope that they'll take the pellets eventually.

As already mentioned, they wont starve...just stop feeding them the guppies and switch them over to pellets...My aro refused pellets for the longest time as he was fed mostly feeder fish at the LFS. I kept adding pellets to the tank and he would take them and spit them out. Eventually he realized it was the only food he was getting and started eating them.

Just remember, they are not going to take the pellets right away so any that are left over, just scoop out of the tank so it doesn't mess up your water quality. Those rotting pellets are terrible.

Hope this helps!

like the rescent post, worms and crickets or if you have any in your house cockroach. I tried the pellets with my jar that is about 4-5" and it also just spit the pellet out, I tried dried shrimp and it immediately swallowed it. Now thats the only thing my jar is into, dried shrimp and an occasional live molly (quarantine by myself)
