How much does personality play when you buy a fish?

Personality doesn't so much shy me away from fish. It does, however DRAW me to fish, even ones that I generally might not even want to keep. For ex. we got a green wolf eel in at a store I used to manage, and it was reclusive and shy. But after a week or so I had it trained to where I would hold food to the glass and it would literaly sit and stay like a dog. I would then toss it in the tank, and he would try to pop out and catch it. I was going to put him in my 55, but got news a couple days before I was to take him home that he died an unfortunate death. :( Now I jump on instinct.

I think that most fish will develop personality depending on the owner/keeper. The more attention you pay to the fish the more personable. My fish shy away from strangers, I have to go towards the tank before they do thier "thing". The Monsters that is, the tetra tanks ...whatever.

It's low on the scale for me. I look for particular species first, then quality of appearance and then health.

I bought some false gars, or "Rocket Gar" when my friend told my my LFS had them and theyve been there for a while.
When I got there I was pretty unimpressed all they did was hide and sometimes burst to the other side of the tank when I looked at them.
Still, I bought two.
Probably the most boring fish I ever bought. Never moved except for when there was food in the tank.

I like fish that move, have good color, etc.

Health is last?!?!?

Personality plays a great role when choosing a fish out of a species tank. The shy and skittish one stays at the fish store, I don't care how attractive it may be.

i'd imagine becuase heath is easy to improve in good water quality. if i see a fish i HAVE to have then i'd buy it if even it had something easy to work on like ich or fin rot.
for me personality is the biggest factor but it's going to be appearance and species that initially attracts me to the fish.
