I have just aquired a 6' tank I am looking to plant and need to work out how many bags of eco complete to order. I have never seen eco complete in person so have no idea as to how well it covers or how much is needed.

My tank is approx 6 foot by 2 foot, and I'd like a depth of approx 2"

Thanks!

Why not go with Flourite Black? Cheaper and more substrate for your money. With EC, you're also paying for the water in the bag.

Ouch. that's a lot of bags.... I have not set up a large tank from scratch before (my previous large one is a 4 foot, and it came with standard gravel) With this tank I only got the tank, stand & hood and a ugf so I need to work on everything - substrate, lights and decent filter

I have not seen a store (online or otherwise) in Australia that sells flourite black. I can get eco complete dry weight in 9.2kg bags (approx 18 lbs) it's about $45 per bag.

Eco-complete comes with water. I have never seen eco-complete as a dry weight. Th 18# eco is a little smaller than the Flourite 12.4# bag in size. If this is intended for a planted tank, then do the flourite, as the nutrient balance lasts longer, and there isn't so much phosphorus. Also, if you intend to plant in this tank, then aim for 4" at the least.

Eco-complete is very expensive but it is a great product. I only use it in smaller planted tanks due to the price. You may want to look into something like Soil Master Select. You can purchase it at your local Lesco dealer. If they dont have it in stock they can ship it there for you. Its not as good as Eco but it is still pretty decent. I got two 50 pound bags for $26. One 50 pound bag covered my 125 with about 2.5 inches of depth. Just something to consider.

Thanks for the links coolpix, will definately check them out. I was thinking of eco complete as I had heard it was good and I wanted the black substrate

Wyldfya - maybe they didn't list it right in the store? the link is http://www.aquagrow.com.au/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=79_80&products_id=197

Stevelamby - I will see if we have an equivalent of soil master select here.

Sorry bud, didnt read that you were from Aus. I dont think they have Lesco dealers there, but it may be worth an email to see if they will ship some to you...

hey no worries, I'm used to the differing products over here as to what you can get in the US (and the prices) I have been known to order stuff online from the US because it's cheaper or just not available here. Some things are more cost effective than others though :-)
