I've never given much thought to this stuff, but my electric company hit me with a $1200 meter adjustment. I previously thought it was all my AV gear running hot and on 24/7 down in the closet... but I guess it's more likely the 400 gallons of water I keep at 84 degrees.

I have no plans to cut back, but man... didn't realize quite how much these guys were costing me. During the winter when we're also using a ton of gas, I end up paying close to $500 a month just for electric and heat in a 2400 sqft place.

:( ouch!!!!!!!!! if your avatar is a pic of your fish, i would definitely say its worth it! Great looking fish!!!!!!!!!!

They should be checking your meter every other month at the least. If they waited that long enough to make that change you can fight it. Sure you underpaid, but they have to stay on top of it, to ensure you do not have something drawing energy. (appliance going bad).

They check ours one yearly during the summer.

I'm cutting down quite a bit. I had roughly 1800 watts of heater alone (granted they don't run all the time, but still).

Goodbye tropical predatory fish, hello predatory aquatic salamanders.

Maybe see if your electric provider has a appliance calculator, i just changed the wattage and hours ran a day on mine through AEP, and it showed the yearly and monthly prices, pretty neat and simple if you ask me :D

No, they claim it's our fault because the meter is behind a lock in the storage unit in back. They allege that they made several attempts.

The last reading was when the house was unoccupied during the long period of showings before we bought it...

Thats so lame, for lack of a better word, that fish keeping has to be managed by how much electricity it cost to maintain it. It really cant cost them THAT much to create it. Or maybe it does and they are just being nice guys and letting us buy it for cheap :ROFL:

Do you pay your electricity bill? My house uses the most power in our area, I checked the online graph. My tanks cost more than 100.00 extra per month, and hydro costs in Ontario are expected to rise by 50% in the next few years.

You have one large tank and a bio-cube, get back to me when you have to pay to keep 1300 gallons worth of tanks heated and filtered :D I'm fortunate to be living at home while in Uni, but doesn't mean I can stick my folks with massive hydro bills.

Im not trying to say "its lame" that you LET electricity limit your fish keeping I'm saying that its lame that electricity makes it so you MUST limit your fish keeping.

Gotcha, power is like gas, the days when it was cheap and almost unlimited are gone alas.
