How much Finquel to knock out aro?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I found this on a goldfish website. I would think an aro would be much stronger than a goldfish.

To sedate with Finquel:

Things you will need:

Finquel (MS-222)- to sedate the fish, so you can treat it. Available from PondRx.
Baking soda (to buffer the Finquel solution)
Clean Towel and pillowcase
2 Buckets one for sedation and one to transport fish back to its tank
Airstone
Instructions

Set up your work area and make sure everything is very clean.
Lay out a towel and one of those hospital blue pads. a pillowcase on top would also work (it's smoother than the towel)
Lay out your other materials within easy reach
Dissolve 1/4 teaspoon of Finquel and 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda per gallon of water used in your sedation bucket. Use water from the tank if possible and match tank temperature.
Place fish in the solution. When it turns over on its side and gill movements slow, remove it from the solution and perform the procedure. If the fish doesn't roll over in 10 minutes, you can add another 1/8 teaspoon of finquel and baking soda per gallon (Use some of your existing water to dissolve it in and make sure it disperses well when added to the sedation bucket).
You will want to work quickly and finish the procedure you're performing as quickly as possible.
Make sure you keep one hand on the fish at all times in case he starts flopping around. Don't want any falls off the counter!
After you've finished the procedure, place the fish in a bucket of clean water and return him to the tank.
You may need to hold the fish for a little while in an area where fresh water is moving through its gills (e.g. by the outflow of the filter) until he gets less groggy.

Update: I relocated the aro on the side of the tank with the return from my sump to give her alot of current to swim against. I also added a powerhead so she is almost constantly swimming against some kind of current.
I also have done regular water changes every two days.
It looks like the gill curl is getting better. Before the whole soft section was folded over onto the hard cover and was pressing close against her head. Now her gill on the right side looks like its sitting farther from her head and is starting to unfold.
I'm crossing my fingers and hoping it will return to normal and the left side will follow.

DUDE YOUR NUTS! :screwy:  :clap

what?!!

There are many vets that work on fish.

It sounds like you are determined to see your fish get better. The care may be expensive, but any reputable vet wil give you a cost estimate first. Check with your local VMA for an experienced doctor in your area. This is not a new area in veterinary medicine, there are hundreds of vets that are trained in fish surgery.

I have personally assisted on several of these procedures, without a good understanding of medicine your fish could die, or be subject to a painful procedure that does nothing. This also usually takes 3 experienced people (1 dr 2techs), and an elaborate setup with specialized equipment and a complete pharmacy.

demandor... Believe me, I have called around and all the vets think I am joking. Keep in mind that I live on a rock in the middle of the ocean. So I think IF I do the surgery I will be on my own.

fishnthings... I found that link a few hours after you posted.

Like I said in my previous post. It looks like its coming around on its own. I have been doing a 50% water change every 2 days and adding a tspn of salt per 5g. So I will keep an eye on her for a few weeks to see if it is constantly getting better.(crossing fingers)
I want to make sure to reverse the gill curl before the gill plate starts to curl also.

I'll check w/ the vet I work with (she has taught aquatic medicine courses) and see if she knows anyone qualified in Hawaii
