I have 25 lbs. in my 50 breeder and that brings it up to about an inch and a half. At 20 pounds per bag I would say start with 2 bags which will definately cover the entire bottom than see were your at.
Hello; In a planted tank I like to have at least four inches of substrate and prefer a bit more. For an unplanted tank it is largely cosmetic and whatever suits a persons taste. I do like the black gravel as a visual enhancment.
Also, would I need to wash the gravel even though its brand new in a bag? Whats the best way to do it? My coworker gave me his old gravel from his 55g and I spent about an hour trying to clean it yesterday. full about half of a 5 gallon bucket full and then put my garden hose in it and spun the gravel around and dumped the water over and over and over.... and over. ha. It never really got crystal clear. Finally I gave up. Im sure its alot cleaner then what it was before but I didnt think it would be so much work.

Hello; I do it much the same way with the exception of cleaning in smaller batches, about a gallon volume. Much easier to manuver and seems to work out better over all for me. I will use at least two buckets, one do do the actual cleaning and a second to place the cleaned gravel.
I use the force of the water from a hose to initially stir up the water and then a smooth round ended stick like a broom handle to stir up the wet gravel slurry. Then quickly pour off the dirty water repeating untill satisified.
Only an hour for 55 gallon volume of gravel and then give up? Always has taken much longer for me and yes it is that much work. Cleaning gravel is one of the more physically demanding parts of tank care, but needed.
It is also a good incentive to not over feed a tank as this leads to dirty gravel much sooner.
Does the water need to completely crystal clear when pouring it out after cleaning it many times? Right at first when I stuck the hose in and mixed it around and poured it out and repeated the process it was very dirty. but after a while it was clearing up. after about an hour and my back started to hurt it was not nearly as dirty water as it was at first but it still had random small particles flowing it in as I was pouring it out... this is when I stopped.
