I'm picking up a 220g acrylic tank next week, and I'm trying to figure out how much heat I need for it. What wattage heaters, and how many?

Would 2x 400W heaters be enough? That's 3.64wpg. Do I need to go higher than that?

How about 3x 300W heaters? That's 4.1wpg.

On my 220, I just have a single 300w heater and my temp stays at 81-82 degrees F (it is at 81 in the early morning and 82 by late afternoon).

My room temperature stays in the low 70's, I have one 300w heater on my 265 and it keeps it at 80 without a problem, but I also have the heater by the intake of my canister filter and by multiple power heads to make sure the heat gets around.

Hmm, we keep our house around 67-68F. I currently use 2x 300w heaters on my 125g's. I've never had an issue with those. Maybe I'll just go with 2x 300w heaters and see how it keeps the temps up.

i use a 300w on mine...

We use (2) 300W hydors on a 210G here in the cool NE. Only one usually is needed to maintain 80°F. The only time I see both on is after WC's.

Well, I'll either use 2x 250w, or 2x 300w. Just because I like redundancy. If one goes out, I don't have to worry about running out and buying a new heater.

I got 2 200 watts on my 330gal, 70 degrees when I am home, otherwise house its 64-65 most of the day. Tank stays at its 76-77 degrees.

You know guys, this is great thing about this site.......I am setting up a 220 as well and have been wondering this same question. The info that I have found so far (outside of MFK) suggests going with 3-250's. I do understand that the ambient air temp is a factor in your heating choice, however it is nice to see so many people proving that the manufacturers are wanting you to buy more of their products!!!

Looks like 2-300's would be plenty to keep the tank warm and not overwork either heater, thus shortening the life span.

Great Thread!!
