how much is your elec bill?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
250 :( Water and electric... 5 tanks and 75% water changes a week.

Mine is usually around $350, sometimes the electric company likes to throw me a curve ball and send me a $500 bill then they slowly refund us over a couple of months due to overcharges. lol This is for a 4200sq ft home with barn on that to. I only have 4 tanks but 1 is a reef so Im sure its consumption for lighting adds up. Water bill is around $50...barn has a well, and unless its the month the pool gets filled I probably dont use that much water. Tanks are lightly stocked so I do no more than 20-30% weekly.

Ok I just calculated my T5 Unit on my saltwater tank.... it cost me $6 a month to run if it were on 24/7. It's not on 24/7 so it really probably only costs me $2-3 to run a month.

my electric bill barely went up. one filter, one 300w heater and a single/double 40w tube light (t8) does not make that much of a dent in an electric bill. once i have my 5x2x2 + sump up and running im interested to see how much thats going to raise my bill.
you only really start seeing the effects when you have multiple tanks or use pond pumps to move water around your system. some pond pumps have some crazy wattages compared to their aquarium counterpart.

you can save money, quite a bit as well, by doing little things to reduce your bill. such as switching your multi-plug extension, which has your dvd player/tv/ps3/surround system plugged into it, off at the mains when they arent in use or you go out (even for just 5 mins). Getting the multi-plug extensions where each socket on the strip has its own swicth so you can switch off what you arent using.
you would be amazed at how much electricity you burn through standby. we saved about £5 a week just by doing what ive mentioned. switch to all energy saving bulbs, there is another couple of pounds a week. it all adds up quite quickly.

i very much doubt you 75g tank has caused, at worst, anything more than a few dollars extra per month.

my electric bill is like $30 cuz i got all my equipment and tanks hooked up to solar panels and i giant wind turbine thats in my front lawn!!!!!!
j/p

Instead of asking to see the bill, contact your electric company and ask them how much it is per kwh. This will eliminate a fight between you and your grandparents, as they are going to get mad when you ask to see it.

for my 360 gallon 12ft tank this is what i run ....

Three 48'' t8 fixtures with two bulbs per fixture putting out 32watts each. So thats 32x6 = 192

Then my 3200gph pump is pushing 175watts

My skimmer is 50watts and my addtional insump pump that runs my eco aqualizer/uv and just other stuff is another 50watts

Then another 50watts from my fx5.

Thats all i run on the tank....

I somehow pay 48$ for all that running..... i keep my lights on all day as well, and moon lights at night.

My electricity bill is about $130 and gas is about $50. I have 4 tanks, 110, 80, 60 and a 55 gallon. One way to lower your bill is to make your heater temp around 76 degrees rather than the 80s. One heater can be 200 watts which is a lot of power to use compared to the other aquarium stuff.

On 5 tanks I'm running (1) Inline Hydor ETH 300, (1) Inline Hydor ETH 200, (1) Stealth 250, (2) Stealth 150s, and (2) Stealth 100s in the water change bin.

That's 1250 w/h with just heaters. It was pretty crazy when I had all 15 tanks running, but I really didn't see a whole lot of change...maybe another $50/month additional.
