how much media?

I wouldn't use Biomax if you are buying new media. Seachem Matrix has more bioavailable surface area than Biomax and may allow for denitrification.

I wouldn't use their polishing pads. If you need a finer mechanical media than the Foam in the outer rings I use polyester pillow stuffing from the craft store. Cram it in as tight as it will fit and this will be a cheaper and just as effective option.

I strongly disagree about no pad over the media especially if your using high efficient media like matrix / substrate pro etc. That pad will help prevent the media form being clogged and help filter out finer particulate waste. The outer sponges DO NOT filter out finer particulate matter and this will be noticeable in your water.

There is also no need to use carbon in your filter. Carbon is a substitute for poor fish keeping !

The most efficient and best way to use your fx5 is to fill all baskets with high efficient bio media and place a blue pad or similar (not white polisher pad from hagen) on top of the media in the top basket.

I would second what rhodes-96 stated. I myself use the what is pictured below and cut it to fit. Also if you do go with matrix, get pond matrix as it is bigger diameter and will not slip through or clog the bottom of the baskets.

Thanks bderick67, i was debating on which version to get......the regular seem kind of small.....so pond version matrix it is then! And i will be adding something similar to what you guys suggested above the bio-media.:)
