How much research do you do?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It kinda depends on the set up you are going for. There isnt anything negative that comes from extensive research but with fish keeping there is a lot if trial and error involved (when mixing species anyway). I wouldnt get too obsessed with the research but basic species requirements such as prefered temp, ph, hardness etc and you're generally good to go.

If you plan to set up a biotype then a lot more research would be required.

How much research do you do before acquiring a new fish? I'm pretty obsessive when it comes to research, not just with fish but with any pet. When I decided to get a parrot I did about two years worth of research before deciding a parrot was right for me, and then I did an additional six months of research into the species I was interested in. I don't regret it though, because otherwise I would have been unprepared for such a demanding and intelligent animal. When it comes to fish I'm the same way, there's a small handful of species I'm interested in and I CAN'T stop researching and asking questions. Anyone else do this? Or are you more care-free when purchasing fish?

I think part of my obsessive research stems from the fact that I'm afraid to get a fish and accidentally kill it. I know they are "only fish" but I'd feel bad nonetheless.

sometimes i bought the fish first then i do my research . :)
for example, my endli. i took a gamble on buying him. i had nver kept one bfore but my dad urged me to buy it. right after i put it into my tank, i immediately do some research. now he's about 5" in just 2 months from 3" long. :)

I'm at somewhere around 20 years and counting.

I'm beyond obsessive and anal and I want to know facts (I'm also an engineer, comes with the territory). So I get stuck up in the contradictory information, or the healthy happy examples that do everything "wrong". I can safely say it's kept me from getting my pet.

To fill in the story I've wanted a shark since I was a kid. I've always loved aquariums and used to visit ones at the zoo all the time. My parents never let me have one growing up (all you kids that complain about only having a 300g tank or only having 4 tanks, I couldn't even get a betta). Then in college and the years after I was moving so much I didn't think it was a good idea. So I finally bought a house but kept worrying about starting off with a big salt tank as my first endeavor so I started easier ( goldfish). Now that I've kept fish for a while and have a better understanding of what it takes I'm even more worried, AND now there is also the issue of having more than 1 tank!

Long story short, if you worry too much (like me) you might never get what you really want.

Research? We don't need no stinking research! Just kidding, the more you know about your future fish, the better you can take care of them. I research EVERYTHING!

Allot of my fish where impulse buys (wolf fish, wild caught oscar pair, trio of wild caught red devils, ect.) so I do research after. If I'm planning on buying an expensive or hard to keep fish I'll reaserch for a bit before I buy it.
