i read a thread about treating ich, and it said to use salt to a percentage of .1 to .3% and a lfs would sell an item for testing my water.

http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2138158&postcount=2

so i went to the store and i see a hydrometer. this does not give percentage.

i may be over thinking this, but how do i find the percentage of salt i have put in the tank?

oh yeah, its a freshwater tank. cichlids, loaches, fire eel, and ghost knife.

In that post it said 1tbsp salt/1 gallon of water=.1% solution. They did the math for you.

Adding table salt to the water shouldn't show up on a hydrometer, I believe, because actual salinity does not rise. Sea water has much more than just sodium chloride in it (table salt). I think it just increases water hardness.

The loaches and eel and ghost knife will ESPECIALLY be sensitive to salt because they have no scales, so I suggest separating them and treating them.

IF I DO THE MATH... 16 CUPS PER GALLON TIMES 48 TEASPOONS PER CUP DEVIDED BY .01 FOR PERCENTAGE, THE RESULT IS LIKE .7 TEASPOONS PER GALLON.

SO 1 TEASPOON IS MORE THAN .1%. NOT TRYING TO BE GOING TOO TECHNICAL, JUST TRYING TO GET THE RIGHT AMOUNT.

OH, THE QUESTION WAS MORE FOR KEEPING THE SALT CONSTANT, LIKE WHEN I DO A WATER CHANGE. THE LINK STATED TO GET A TESTER AT A STORE BUT NO STORE SEEMS TO HAVE ONE THAT MEASURES % OF SALT.

i guess depending on the salt you buy from your lfs, when ever i have treated ich, i always use 1 table spoon for every 5G of water, plus i raise the water temp to as high as i can get it with out causing discomfort to the fish

Salt (sodium chloride or NaCl) is a much more gentle than usual Ich medicines sold in pet stores. Some medicines can push a commercial pest sick over the edge. Salt will not harm your filter bacteria, is expensive and will not affect people who come into contact with it, but not all fish tolerate salt. We recommend it only for cold water fish Goldfish and Koi. Tropical fish are best treated with a combination of formalin malachite / laugh as Ich or Quick Cure. Salt can kill also some plants, so you'll need to remove any live plants in a pot and disinfect (potassium Permanginate plant works well for disinfection). Salt must be completely dissolved in the water tank before adding to the reservoir. Most any salt will work fine. Rock salt or pickling salt work great and are cheap. Avoid using salt that contains yellow soda prussiate
