Dry pool filter sand weighs just shy of 100 lbs per cubic foot…

Therefore 100 lbs of pool filter sand will put 1” of sand across 12 square feet…

100 lbs = 1”
150 lbs = 1.5”
200 lbs = 2”
Etc…

OK, yeah, that's much easier. I don't know why I was doing it such a convoluted way.

Here, have a visual... My tank has the same footprint or 72" x 24'. I ended up happy with 150 lbs.

This was at bag #1 = 50 lbs:

This was after 3 bags = 150 lbs:

The geos make some high and low spots but you get the idea. When it's 100% level after a good stirring when I do my WC's it's about 2"-2.5" even evenly across the tank.

Nice looking spread but you dont have molding at the botton thats why you got away with 150.

Mine has the oak trim and it took 2 bags more to almost look the same. So it will depend on if he has trim or not.

That black sand looks awesome. What kind is it? The only black aquarium sand I can find at my lfs runs about $20 and some change for what I believe is a 12lb bag.
