How much sand?

Depends on the sand you're using, but 175lbs of pool filter sand will give you around a 2" bed. I used 50lb bag to achieve 2" in a 65g 48x18"
 
Hmm ok I think I'll stick to 1" deep. Anyway I got 2 types of sand available. F3 and F5 grade, are they safe for fish?

Hmm I thought that the height of the tank doesn't matter but the footprint?

It doesn't matter generally, but when people have to guess, one pound per gallon is a good estimate. Something like a 75, 125 or so.
 
Mainland Tropical Fish Farm. I've been looking for white sand and a friend here told me they sell it there, $25 for 10kg. Very reasonable in my opinion.
 
Hey christian, I have a friend who can get $25 for 25kg of white sand, interested?
