How much sugar

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I will add more bottles..what is the best recipe??? I Did 2-cups sugar and a start up pack and the other one it came with and filled the 2-liter with 2/3's warm water and shook it up..... I want the best possible co2 minus pressurized c02.. Thanks for everyones help , in new to planted tanks, I've searched the web and cannot get a actual good recipe or info !

I've always used 1 Ts Yeast, 2Cups sugar - some suggest adding a Ts of baking powder it's not needed but you can add it. It really depends by doing 1-2 you'll get more Co2 but it won't last as long - 3/4-2 It will last a little longer but won't produce as much co2 becaus you cutting down on the yeast.

I would suggest that you make something like I do just because it prevents alot of headaches in the future. I use a pop bottle that goes into a 1litre pop bottle which I use for sorta a bubble counter and a backup system incase there is backflow and you don't use a one way valve this stops any yeast getting into your tank which is messy and horrible to deal with. If you want to add 2-3-4 2L's it would work I suppose it's DIY man you will be always tweaking your setup for something better and what works best for you.

Back to the 1-L just take a peice of tubing run it from the 2Litre to the 1L extending about halfway down into the water (Fill the 1L 3/4 full of water) and just extend your tubing from the 1L into your diffuser. You will be able to easily counter your bubbles and if there is a backup of yeast it will hit the 1litre and reduce anything getting into your main tank.

**Make sure all your tubing seals to your lids are tight and there is no leaks!

One 2-liter probably won't make any difference at all. I have three 2-liters on my 75 gallon. (It's the one in my avatar) Most people will tell you that even with three 2-liters it's a waste of time on a tank this size but my plants do great. Some day it would be nice to upgrade to real CO2 but it's just too expensive for me too.

Here's how I do mine. I fill the bottom section of the Dew bottle with sugar (2 cups) then add 1/2 tsp of yeast and fill to the part of the bottle where it starts to get narrow with warm water.

I have three 2-liters on the 75 gallon. The bottles in the pic are from a 55 gallon. To add more bottles you just need another T connector. The 20 ounce bottle acts as a bubble counter and gas separator. The airline where the CO2 comes in should extend below the water in the 20 ounce and the air line where the CO2 exits should be above the level of the water in the 20 ounce. This allows you to see the bubbles in the water and if any of the yeast mixture makes its way to the 20 ounce it will not make it to the tube carrying gas to the aquarium.

You really need to include a check valve so you don't end up siphoning the yeast mixture into your tank. I had a little store-bought yeast generator on this tank a few years ago that got knocked over and allowed the mixture to get in the tank. I was racing to get fish in a tank full of white water. They were on the bottom gasping. Not good so be sure to get a check valve.

Thanks splant - This is exactly what I was trying to explain in my post before you - I was looking for pictures and didn't come up with any.

What did you seal your caps with?? Looks like a hot glue gun or something?

As I was reading your description I was thinking... hey a pic would be helpful lol. I took those for someone on another forum so they were already on my pc.

It's aquarium silicone. Those bottles are a little messy but at least they don't leak. With the silicone you have to let it dry for the full 24 hours. If you only wait a few hours then fill the bottles and put the caps on you get giant co2 filled silicone bubbles. Don't ask me how I know that...

i agree, with DIY CO2 on large tanks you need alot of bottles. I am running 3x2L on my 46 gallon and I remake a batch everyweek. I do 2Cups of sugar, 1/2 tsp of yeast and it works well for me. This provides a near constant flow of CO2 into my tank. I would imagine that you would need someting like 5 bottles on a 75 gallon.

And I run it through an inline reactor to get efficient diffusion. Efficiency of diffusion is of paramount importance with DIY CO2 because the input is so much less than in pressurized.
