How much $ to make salt aquarium?

honestly what shocked me was the price of rock... lolol i think i have 150 in rocks alone... lol

for fish only 500 or less. For fish only with live rock.... depends how cheap you get your live rock maybe a grand before fish are even added.... For a full on reef tank... its best not to think about it.... thats what I do....

i have had reef setups for years. the setup cost is the cheap part. i had way more in livestock and live rock then i did in the rest of the stuff.

Most people don't have enough money for coral. And they're more work than freshwater.

Friend has an empty 55 gallon freshwater aquarium. His mom wants to make it a saltwater aquarium, how much wild everything cost? Start to finish. Right now all they have is the aquarium and stand. No holes have been drilled and nothing has been purchased. I'm pretty sure salt aquariums cant be run with canister filters, and they'll need salt, coral, fish, testing kits, pretty much everything. Just out the item and price please. I know they dont have the money for salt, I just want an estimate to give them.

I personal just setup a fish only sw for under $100.
30Lbs of crushed coral $24
Ocean salt mix $20
Api master test kit $18
3 damsels $15
I already owned the tank, filter, powerhead, heater, decorations and conditioner(prime, special blend, & night out II)
And yes you can use a canister filter



Tank Setup - 135gal, fx5, mag350, korilla 4, 3 silver dollars, 3 Red blood parrots, 12" Green severum, 10 coreys (3 emerald & 7 swarts), 2 black spotted eels, 22" fire eel, 24" clown knife, sun catfish, and leopard plaeco

I have had a 55gal salt water running for 2 years now and have not lost a fish other then fish killing fish. And all it has running it is a canister filter the biggest thing with salt water is you want to turn to water over at lest 6 times per hour just get good live sand and for the live rock buy it a pice at a time. I think my total Cost was like 500 to get it started. Just do small fish because you don't want the load on the filter you can add a protein skimmer later after you start getting a lot of waste build up that's 500 bucks with the tank costing 200 used

I found a pic just after setting it up with only on small pice of live rock to get started to save money I used some river rock for a base so I don't have to buy as much live rock to cover the back every other time I go to the lfs I grab another pice

Think i may be close with the small fresh water setup i have:-

200L tank £230
FX5 £210
Sand £25
Plants £20
Drift wood £25
decoration £40
Heaters £35
PH Tester £15
Water test kit £35
Fish £200+

Thats £835 but im now moving to a much larger tank which the tank alone is £1,070 then i need lights, more heaters, more sand etc..... its a very expensive hobby - but we do it cos we love it!
