I recently got a koi for my birthday and i plan on building an outdoor above ground pond out of of lumber 4ft wide 8ft long and 4ft deep. is that enough for one koi. ive been told i need 1000+ gallons for my one fish. the fish came from a local walmart super center, its healthy and in good condition. right now it is about 3inches long.

-i only plan on keeping one fish

that would be way more than enough for one koi. id keep about 4-5 in that pond. koi do better in groups. and besides, can you really only keep one koi?? im sure youll want to get more, its addicting :)

Wow that sounds like fun. I plan on doing a pond this summer. Im gonna copy a fellow MFK guy and put a sturgeon in there. You can catch them in the Sacramento river :)

last week i saw a pond like the one i plan on building on this site, dont know if the pic is still up here or not. got a koi because i was getting tired of keeping small fish, wanted somthing bigger :)

that makes me feal alot better. i freaked out when the people i asked said 1000+ gallons for my one fish.

i'd rather build it that way i can adjust the size if i need to, i keep my little koi in a 10 gal aquarium for now, gonna build to my posted specs so when it gets bigger it will have enough room.
