red eared sliders are pretty cheap and easy to take care of. or you could get a painted, which stay smaller and IMO are more beautiful.

Something like a male painted or small species of mud doesn't need a particularly big tank (I'd probably go with something like a 40 breeder or bigger). Their care is pretty simple. Depending on which species and where you get it, the actual turtle would probably cost between $10 and $40.

ya i deffinetly considered getting a red ear slider.and i would be putting it in a 40 gallon tank. so it would have a pretty good amt of room. and what r ur guys thought on a box turtle. the ones that arnt really aquatic

In a 40G male painted, male map, mud or musk...not enough space for a slider, definitely not a box, I've tried it, they need a ton of room.

Agreed.

Boxes really aren't a tank turtle at all. Some sort of large pen (preferably outdoors) should be used to house boxes as they are basically a tort.
