I also use the centers of floor scrubbing pads. I get them for free from work.

DIY wet/drys can be as cheap as you want them to be. If it holds water, it can be a filter:)
 
I'd be using scribbies. Have a few ?'s that need answers too.
1. What sized pvc would I use?

2. What size/kind of pump to use?

3. And are the overflows loud? It will be in my room, and can't have anything that loud.
 
I am far from a sump pro,
I used 1" pvc diy overflow
& a quietone 3000 pump
The overflow is very quiet if its setup & tweeked right
 
How much was the pump?
